Centre for Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Studies (C3AMS) African University of Science and Technology (AUST), Abuja

Climate change affects everything including geopolitics, economies, migration, environment, and population dynamics. It shapes cities, life expectancies and has presented major challenge to Africa’s achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report 2018 highlighted the grave consequences of a temperature rise above 1.5°C, especially for Africa.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) estimates that costs associated with climate-change adaptation across Africa could hit $50 billion annually by 2050, even if the global temperature does not rise more than 2°C above pre-industrial levels. Under the Paris Agreement, all countries committed to take collective action on climate change to hold the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

African countries have outlined bold aspirations to build climate-resilient and low-carbon economies in their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to the Paris Agreement. As of July 2021, 53 African countries out of 54 have submitted their first NDCs and Africa will need to invest more than $3 trillion in mitigation and adaptation by 2030 in order to implement its NDCs.

At the African University of Science and Technology (AUST), Abuja Nigeria, the Centre for Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Studies (C3AMS) is designed for an African disruptive research-based learning, climate policy design and formulations, sustainability, and one-stop shop for climate adaptation and mitigations’ expert advisory. The Centre is in collaboration with a team of high-quality researchers in AUST, researchers/research users in organizations and across the continent.

C3AMS focuses on new and emerging technologies, multidisciplinary and translational research relevant to Environmental Sustainability, Climate Adaptation and Mitigation, Carbon Capture Utilization and Sequestration (CCUS), carbon engineering, Energy transitions, Green Building and Development in Africa.

The Centre is expected to drive an R&D culture in institutions at the continental level increasing collaborative and sponsored research, publications in reputed national/international journals and conferences, applications of research outputs, patents, and innovations.
