AUST, NTA TO COLLABORATE ON INFORMATION DISSEMINATION AND HUMAN CAPACITY BUILDING

The African University of Science and Technology (AUST), Abuja and the premier television network in Africa, the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), has agreed to partner in the area of information dissemination and human capacity building.

The Director General of NTA, Mallam Yakubu Ibn Muhammed disclosed this in Abuja while responding to a speech by the Acting President of African University of Science and Technology, (AUST), Professor Azikiwe Peter Onwualu, FAS during the later’s visit to the DG.

According to him “ the African University of Science and Technology, Abuja is unique as it has since inception in 2008 produced employable graduates who are contributing to the development of science and technology not only in Nigeria but in the whole of Africa contrary to some universities that cannot boast of such employable graduates”

Mallam Muhammed stressed that it is the primary responsibility of NTA just like any other media organization to pass information to members of the public despite the fact that it is partially commercialized. Hence the visit of the AUST team was a welcome development.

While congratulating Professor Onwualu on his appointment as the acting president of this citadel of academic excellence, he urged him to ensure that research findings from the university are not kept in the shelves or journals but put into practical use to proffer solutions to the numerous problems confronting Nigeria in particular and Africa in general.

The DG NTA promised in whatever way to ensure the university is brought to limelight and thanked the AUST boss for the visit.

Earlier in his speech, the Acting President of AUST, Professor Azikiwe Peter Onwualu, FAS, thanked the NTA DG for the warm reception accorded him and his entourage.

He reiterated AUST’s mission which according to him is “to produce Scientists and Engineers that would pummel S&T development in Africa in the next millennium”

 In achieving this Professor Onwualu stated that the university has made tremendous in road in the treatment and detection of cancer using Nano technology, production of solar energy using solar cells, formation of alternative building materials, offering solutions to the problems posed by corrosion in the oil and gas industry as well as the utilization of biomass in the production of fuel to mention but few.

Prof. Onwualu reiterated the readiness of AUST to partner with NTA in showcasing the numerous research feats attained by the university.

At the end of the discussion, it was agreed that the two corporate entities should form a small committee to come up with a workable Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) after receiving a formal request from AUST.

AUST team was represented by the Acting President, Professor Azikiwe Peter Onwualu, FAS, the Bursar/Financial Director, Mr. Ben Obi Okonkwo; Director, Academic Planning, Dr. Abdulhakeem Bello; Head, Media Services/PR, Prince Obioha Sampson Atulomah; Personal Assistant to the Acting President and AUST budget Officer, Mr. Solomon Ibrahim and NYSC Corps Attached to the Media Office, Mr. Solomon Emmanuel Onalo.

Mallam Yakubu Ibn Muhammed led the NTA team. Others who joined him to welcome the AUST team were, Mr. Wale Coker, Director Programs; Mallam Umar Lalu, Director, News; Engineer Okpanachi Moses, Director, Engineering/Operations; Mallam Muhammed Ali, deputy Director, News and Barrister (Mrs) Tessy Nwaneri, Legal Adviser.

The African University of Science and Technology offers B. Sc, M. Sc and Ph. D programs and short courses in different fields of Science, Engineering and Management.
