Prof. Inyang was recently appointed President of the African University of Science and Technology (AUST) based in Abuja, Nigeria. Prof. Inyang has made more than two decades of technical and policy contributions to regional and global sustainable development as an educator/administrator, researcher, government official and corporate leader. He comes to this position from his responsibilities as the Duke Energy Distinguished Professor of Environmental Engineering and Science, Professor of Earth Science and Founding Director (since 2001) of the Global Institute for Energy and Environmental Systems (GIEES) at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. Recently, he was a finalist for the position of United Nations UnderSecretary General and Rector of United Nations University in Tokyo.
He is currently the President of the International Society for Environmental Geotechnology (ISEG) and the Global Alliance for Disaster Reduction (GADR). In 2008, he was selected as a Technical Judge of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. From 1997 to 2001, he was the Chair of the Environmental Engineering Committee of the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Science Advisory Board, and also served on the Effluent Guidelines Committee of the National Council for Environmental Policy and Technology.
